Lockean Property Theory: A Menu of Options for the Justification of Unilateral Appropriation

Abstract

Although John Locke’sLocke, John propertyProperty theory, especially his principle of unilateral appropriationUnilateral appropriation, is undoubtedly influential, no one seems to agree on exactly what he was trying to say. He has been interpreted in so many strikingly different ways that there is unlikely to be an “a-ha” moment, when someone writes the interpretation, effectively ending the controversy. Given the influence of and the controversy over Locke’sLocke, John theory of unilateral appropriationUnilateral appropriation, it is worthwhile to take stock of the range of theories that have been developed out of it. In that effort, this chapter presents a critical examination of LockeLocke, John and his interpreters point-by-point, not to identify the one correct interpretation of his theory but to identify the menu of options: the range of potentially valid ways in which unilateral appropriationUnilateral appropriation might be used to justify private propertyPrivate property rights.
