Abstract

This book addresses the question of what property-rights regimeProperty-rights regime delivers the most extensive equal libertyEqual liberty (understood as freedomFreedom from interferenceInterference in the continuous, scalar, or incremental sense of the term as opposed to the dichotomous sense of freedomFreedom discussed in my earlier book). The goal is to determine the property-rights regimeProperty-rights regime that delivers the maximal freedomMaximal freedom consistent with equal freedomFreedom for all. It rejects the concept of a natural right to propertyProperty. The rights it argues for are derived from the goal of maximizing equal freedomFreedom in the neutral sense of the term. The theory of status freedomStatus freedom as ECSO freedomECSO freedom acts as a constraint on the propertyProperty system, and so I’ll mention it only when relevant.
