Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive account of the link between digital technologies and business model innovation through a systematic literature review. In doing so, it devotes particular attention to the studies that investigate this relationship in established companies, which are analysed through the lens of three important BM dimensions, namely, value creation, value proposition, and value capture. From the review of the literature, it emerges that digital technologies can improve operational efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and real-time data sharing, thus fostering business model innovation which, in turn, can boost the performance and competitiveness of incumbent firms. At the same time, these companies are posed with several challenges, concerning for instance skills, job displacement, and barriers to digitization, which need to be carefully understood and faced.
