Making personal connections with social psychology

Abstract

My university’s curriculum embodies the ‘Paideia’ spirit, which involves making connections - between courses, with other disciplines and to the larger world. In social psychology, my assignments ask students to make connections through personal applications to course theories and concepts. In this chapter, I describe two assignments that involve personal application in a way that students not only find engaging and worthwhile, but that are rewarding to grade: (1) an application-based take-home final exam (that requires no studying and disincentivizes cheating) and (2) a social psychology blog, which includes weekly ‘personal experience’ blogs, a ‘participant observer’ blog, and a ‘tradebook’ blog. Verbatim instructions for all assignments are given in the appendices, and links to other resources (e.g. grading guides, past student examples) are included in the chapter.
