Abstract

This chapter describes pedagogical approaches, and formative and summative assignments, that promote deep processing of material while empowering students to apply social psychological theories to the self and beyond. First, I describe a formative, weekly assignment wherein students apply a theory to their own lives or tackle a mini case study. Next, I describe a summative public health campaign assignment that encourages students to discover the relevance of social psychology for promoting attitude and/or behavior changes using a medium of their choice. Third, I describe a summative blog post assignment where students synthesize an article of their choosing (from a selection) for the public, providing students with the meta-experience of translating the science of social psychology for others. The overarching aim of this chapter is to inspire teachers to provide opportunities to enliven students’ engagement with social psychology and discover its relevance to daily life.
