Abstract

Performance measurement is a critical dimension of management control theory and practice, and one of the most widely researched areas of management accounting. The objective of this Research Handbook is to provide a foundation for the next generation of research in management accounting on performance measurement. The contributions to the Research Handbook, which we outline in this chapter, provide a comprehensive overview of the existing state of knowledge in this domain and provide insights into future research opportunities. The Research Handbook includes contributions from leading thinkers in performance measurement research, who provide their vision of the performance measurement horizon, key performance measurement research frameworks and topics, and the “doing” of performance measurement research. In this chapter we offer some thoughts as to the overarching themes reflected in the Research Handbook as a whole, and we present readers with a roadmap to the Research Handbook by summarizing each of the chapters.
