Abstract

This chapter examines how organisational learning (OL) with a pragmatist lens can contribute to shifting algorithmic management (AM) from a ‘fault line’ toward a strategic opportunity for trade unions. We seek through this chapter to highlight that, when faced with a ‘fault line’, trade unions need to act differently and therefore to learn differently. We highlight that AM can befit a pragmatist take on OL; especially that its three pillars - inquiry, experience and social worlds - are much needed for trade unions, so they could achieve better understanding to negotiate and regulate. Through this chapter we will highlight how AM is a ‘fault line’, we will then present the different approaches of OL while emphasizing the pragmatist one. Finally, we will see the essential role of learning for trade unions and how AM would be an opportunity to test a pragmatist OL approach - one which is more fulfilling for trade unions to achieve their roles when faced with ‘fault lines’.
