Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the accessibility services available to students in higher education institutions in the United States. A brief history of the origin and development of services is presented, followed by an overview of several significant legal mandates that directly impacted, and continue to impact, student access. The chapter will also discuss the establishment and development of a cohort of higher education professionals who deliver these services. The impact of COVID-19, and other current trends are also discussed, including universal design, emerging technologies, evolving philosophies regarding disability, and changing practices related to cross-campus collaboration.
