A journey to include students with disabilities in Taiwan higher education

Abstract

This chapter provides a brief overview of the development and implementation of inclusive practices for students with disabilities (SWDs) in Taiwan’s higher education settings. Several important issues are covered to help readers obtain information on inclusive practices and disability services on campuses, including general statistical information on Taiwanese people with disabilities (PWDs), significant disability laws and regulations for social welfare and education, supporting systems and accommodations required by legal guidance, and, finally, career preparation services and counseling for SWDs in colleges and universities. Lastly, one of the primary objectives of supporting SWDs to attend higher education is to assist them in obtaining proper knowledge and improve their work competence for their workforce participation after graduation. We also discuss whether school-to-work transition services should be emphasized more and be available early in higher education.
