Supports and services for students with disabilities in postsecondary education in Canada

Abstract

This chapter provides a brief background regarding the development of access to postsecondary disability services for students in Canada. We review the relevant disability legislation that compels and regulates academic accommodations in postsecondary education. An update is provided regarding current trends in the type of information required from students in order to access disability-related supports and services in postsecondary education. Both general and disability-specific supports available in Canadian colleges and universities are outlined, including supports that pertain to personal and academic needs, and we offer guidance regarding how to find each of these services and when to use them. We also identify certain postsecondary institutions that have specialized supports (such as attendant care within residence, supports specific to those with autism spectrum disorder or intellectual disabilities), and offer readers ways to find out more about these unique programs. This chapter concludes by outlining disability funding options available to students with disabilities in Canada.
