Understanding agent-based computational simulation

Abstract

This chapter covers some of the main topics in ontology and epistemology of an ABM approach to science. The first part of the chapter introduces the main issues in defining what a model is and what it can do, by ending with the peculiarities of computational models as epistemic tools. The chapter then presents an overview of complexity, by also defining systems and the most important property of complex social systems, i.e. emergence. The conclusion is a very succinct perspective on classic ontological and epistemological stances as they relate to manipulative abduction, that best describes ABM as an approach rather than just a tool.
