Abstract

Few people would disagree that corruption and academic misconduct seriously undermine academic quality and standards in higher education (HE). However, until recently the role of accreditation and quality assurance bodies (AQABs) in supporting academic integrity has not been considered. This chapter focuses on global research conducted during 2017_18 when AQABs were surveyed about their actions and policies for detecting and deterring corruption in HE. The results highlighted a small minority of AQABs proactively challenging malpractice and corruption. The majority of responses exposed complacency and denial from AQABs towards serious threats to HE from corruption. Lack of engagement with academic integrity issues by many AQABs is, at the very least, a lost opportunity. The role of AQABs in the oversight of higher education quality, standards and integrity has never been more important. These findings demonstrate considerable scope for more in-depth studies on related topics.
