Multilingual essay mills: the need for research beyond English language commercial providers

Abstract

Contract cheating is a global phenomenon that exists in numerous other languages beyond English. In a pilot project using a rapid review method, the authors determined that commercial contract cheating providers were offering services in languages other than English. They found evidence of commercial operators offering a variety of academic work in Arabic, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish and Welsh, in addition to English. This multi-language contract cheating has been largely neglected as an avenue of research. Research into contract cheating can draw upon the language skills of research teams to expand our understanding of contract cheating in other languages. The authors call for a systematic inquiry into commercial contract cheating companies that market and provide services in languages other than English, emphasizing the need for methodological rigour when conducting web-based research to provide a credible evidence base to further the research agenda in this area.
