Abstract

The Memphis Medical District Collaborative (MMDC) focuses on a particular geographic area that includes numerous anchor institutions, which are nonprofit organizations of various types and sizes - medical institutions, institutions of higher education, philanthropic organizations. This district-focused form of community partnerships tends to creatively develop initiatives around the common interests of a cluster of anchor institutions. This chapter introduces MMDC's background, geographical, historical and cultural context, its key strategies such as aggregating demand for labor, products, and services among the anchor institutions in the District, the role/ value of NGOs/ Non-profits involved and MMDC's progress.
