Lithuania: the battle for independence

Abstract

Lithuania’s turn away from the Soviet-era energy system and European Union membership resulted in a strategic effort to diversify gas and electricity supplies. Of all the countries joining the EU from the Eastern Bloc, Lithuania demonstrates the most dramatic shift away from Russian energy resources and technologies. Policymakers, entrepreneurs, and society chose democracy, transparency, and a transition towards an economically affordable and environmentally sustainable energy system. Lithuania captures the story of the level of independence achievable by investing in technologies and supply diversification while dealing with historical infrastructure and cultural attributes of the previous political-economic energy system.
