Abstract

2014 war das Jahr des Thomas Piketty. Sein umfangreiches Werk „Das Kapital im 21. Jahrhundert“ wurde weltweit diskutiert, vielerorts mit großer Begeisterung. Und das, obwohl die Kernaussage seiner Arbeit durchaus Bedrückendes zu Tage fördert: Die Kluft zwischen Arm und Reich werde immer größer, sie drohe ähnliche Ausmaße anzunehmen wie zu Zeiten Charles Dickens’. Zuvor hatte schon Papst Franziskus in seinem allersten Apostolischen Schreiben „Evangelii Gaudium“ die wachsende Ungleichheit angeprangert, nun lieferte Piketty den statistischen Beweis. Oder auch nicht. Denn sein großer Erfolg wurde ihm gleichermaßen zum Verhängnis. Das mediale Interesse weckte die Neugier der Ökonomen-Zunft, in deren Zirkeln Pikettys Ansichten wissenschaftlich weitgehend widerlegt wurden.1 In den Reihen der Kritiker finden sich auch angesehene Ökonomen der Linken, wie Peter Bofinger, der darauf hinweist, dass Piketty selbst es sei, der seine Thesen im eigenen Werk widerlegt. In dasselbe Horn stößt der liberale Ökonom Karl-Heinz Paqué.
