Effect Of Different Postharvest Treatment On Shelf Life Of Banana (Musa Paradisiaca Cv. Malbhog)

Abstract

Banana is a high-value agricultural commodity and the demand is increasing over the years. Post-harvest losses management is a matter of concern as it is more succumb to deterioration due to its perishable nature. An experiment was carried out at the laboratory of the Department of Horticulture, Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, Chitwan to study the efficacy of different post-harvest treatments on the shelf-life of banana (Musa paradisiaca cv. Malbhog) in 2022. The design of the experiment was Completely Randomized Block Design (CRD) with 5 post-harvest treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were an aqueous extract of neem in the concentration of (1:1 w/v), gibberellic acid (200ppm), hot water (50ºcelsius) dipped for 5 minutes and wax (8%) dipped for 1 minute. The data were collected from 10 destructive samples and 5 non-destructive samples of 3 days interval and data analysis were done using R studio V 1.1. The higher shelf life of 24 days was observed in fruits treated with wax followed by gibberellic acid treated fruits and neem extract treated fruits (21.00). The lower physiological loss in weight (8.10%), high TSS (22.96⁰ brix) was found in fruits treated with wax. Likewise, Gibberellic acid treated fruits showed the higher TA (0.75). The neem extract and wax treated fruits showed the maximum ripening days (14). Similarly, the hot water treated fruits showed the minimum TA (0.52). From the above study, the aqueous extract of neem, gibberellic acid and wax both treatments showed similar effectiveness on shelf life and quality of banana fruits.
