Multidimensional poverty in South‐West Nigeria: Empirical insights from a household survey in Osun State

Abstract

By employing Alkire and Foster's Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) and the Foster‐Greer‐Thorbecke methods of measuring poverty, this paper ascertained both monetary and multidimensional poverty among rural households in South‐West Nigeria. Overall, 50.3% and 40.1% of households were found to be unidimensionally and multidimensionally poor, respectively. The results also revealed that living standards are the highest contributor towards the MPI, followed by access to the internet and education. A probit analysis shows that female‐headed households and those headed by Muslims and particularly the Yoruba tribe are highly affected by poverty. Also, a household head's education, age, and income as well as a household's size significantly contribute to MPI, calling policymakers to prioritize the equal provision of health, education, and internet facilities in rural areas. 通过采用Alkire和Foster的多维度贫困指数以及Foster‐Greer‐Thorbecke的贫困衡量法，本文确定了尼日利亚西南部农村家庭的货币贫困与多维度贫困。总体而言，属于单维度贫困和多维度贫困的家庭分别为50.3%和40.1%。结果还显示，生活水平对多维度贫困指数(MPI)的贡献最大，其次是互联网获取和教育。Probit分析表明，户主为女性的家庭和穆斯林户主家庭（尤其是约鲁巴部落）深受贫困影响。此外，户主的教育程度、年龄、收入以及家庭规模对MPI具有显著影响，这呼吁决策者优先考虑在农村地区平等提供医疗、教育和互联网设施。 Al emplear el índice de pobreza multidimensional de Alkire y Foster y los métodos de medición de la pobreza de Foster‐Greer‐Thorbecke, este documento determinó tanto la pobreza monetaria como la multidimensional entre los hogares rurales en el suroeste de Nigeria. Los resultados también revelaron que el nivel de vida es el factor que más contribuye al índice de pobreza multidimensional (IPM), seguido del acceso a Internet y la educación. Un análisis probit muestra que los hogares encabezados por mujeres y los encabezados por musulmanes y, en particular, la tribu yoruba se ven muy afectados por la pobreza. Además, la educación, la edad y los ingresos de un jefe de hogar, así como el tamaño del hogar, contribuyen significativamente al IPM, lo que llama a los formuladores de políticas a priorizar la provisión equitativa de servicios de salud, educación e Internet en las áreas rurales.
