Abstract

This article explores the challenges and possibilities for fostering covenantal pluralism in Serbia. While there is an obvious need for nurturing and developing covenantal pluralism in both Serbia and across the Western Balkans, I identify three distinct, and yet interconnected, challenges to achieving this goal: the historical context, the current legal framework for religion in Serbia, and the transnational nature of the dominant religious actors in the region. Furthermore, I analyze the peculiarities of the Serbian case through three core dimensions of covenantal pluralism, highlighting the role of foreign influences in the region, and outlining specific political preconditions essential for advancing covenantal pluralism in Serbia.
