Abstract

Dr. James H. Robinson founded Operation Crossroads Africa, which enabled young North Americans to work at the grassroots level with young Africans. At a time when the image of the United States on the African continent was a mixed bag, Robinson was welcomed everywhere and had direct access to the new leaders seeking to build independent nation-states. He recognized the importance of personal diplomacy, the soft power of generosity, and the smart power of cultural exchange and foreign aid. He understood how faith could help build social capital, shape the moral discourse, influence civic participation, transform communities, and provide direct services.
