Determination of the Number of Significant Flows in Origin-Destination Specific Analysis: The Case of Commuting in Flanders

Abstract

In areas with complex commuting structures, such as Flanders in Belgium, divisions into functional regions do not provide the best picture of geographical structuration. In such situations, the degree of polarization may be more useful. This degree can be measured by the number of significant commuting flows. The aim of this paper is to determine this number of significant flows from threshold values. To reduce the inherent arbitrariness as much as possible, a three-step procedure (multiple linkage analysis, cluster analysis and skewness) is applied to an origin-destination matrix of between-municipality commuting data in Flanders, which allows a transparent classification of municipalities. Cet article cherche a determiner ce nombre de flux importants a partir des valeurs de seuil. Pour minimiser les effets arbitraires inherents, on applique un processus a trois temps (une analyse a liaisons multiples, une analyse typologique et l'asymetrie) a une matrice provenance-destination des donnees relatives aux migrations quotidiennes entre les municipalites en Flandres, ce qui permet un classement transparent des municipalites. In Gebieten mit komplexen Pendlerverkehrsstrukturen, wie z. B. Flandern, liefert eine Aufteilung in funktionelle Regionen nicht das beste Abbild der geografischen Strukturierung. In solchen Fallen kann das Ausmass der Polarisierung nutzlichere Ergebnisse liefern. Dieses Ausmass lasst sich anhand der Anzahl signifikanter Pendlerverkehrsstrome messen. Diese Anzahl der signifikanten Strome soll in diesem Beitrag anhand von Schwellenwerten bestimmt werden. Um diese inharente Willkur so weit wie moglich zu reduzieren, wenden wir ein dreistufiges Verfahren (multiple Linkage-Analyse, Clusteranalyse und Skewness) auf eine Ursprung-Ziel-Matrix mit Daten uber den Pendlerverkehr zwischen verschiedenen flamischen Gemeinden an, was eine transparente Klassifizierung der Gemeinden ermoglicht. En tales situaciones, el grado de polarizacion podria ser mas util. Este grado puede medirse en funcion del numero de flujos significativos de desplazamientos. El objetivo de este documento es determinar este numero de flujos significativos a partir de valores umbrales. A fin de reducir al maximo posible las discrecionalidades inherentes, aplicamos un procedimiento de tres pasos (analisis de enlaces multiples, analisis de agrupaciones y sesgos) a una matriz de origen-destino de los datos de desplazamientos entre municipios en Flandes, lo que nos da una clasificacion transparente de los municipios.
