Abstract

Although researchers examining the internationalization of service activity emphasize the need to see it as a holistic process because of the interdependency between production and services, conceptualization of the internationalization process to date has been constrained by the common tendency to focus on specialist service corporations. The most fruitful theoretical developments to date have focused on the evolution of subsidiaries within the organizational dynamics of transnational corporations as they seek to construct complex integrated value chains for their global production networks. This paper examines these developments in the context of Ireland's emerging internationally traded services sector associated with the significant presence of foreign-owned technology corporation subsidiaries. Based on a number of case studies, the paper examines the evolution of these subsidiaries from an initial focus on manufacturing to an increasing involvement in the servicing of their European and global markets. Bien que les chercheurs qui etudient l'internationalisation des services soulignent la necessite de la considerer comme un processus holistique a cause de l'interdependance entre la production et les services, jusqu'ici la conceptualisation du processus d'internationalisation a ete contrainte par la tendance generale a focaliser les societes de services specialises. Jusqu'a maintenant les developpements theoriques les plus utiles ont porte sur l'evolution des filiales au sein de la dynamique organisationnelle des societes internationales au fur et a mesure qu'elles cherchent a construire des chaines de valeur integrees complexes pour leurs reseaux de production mondialises. Cet article cherche a examiner ces developpements dans le cadre du secteur irlandais naissant des services echanges sur le plan international qui est lie a la presence non-negligeable des filiales a vocation technologique et a capital etranger. A partir d'un nombre de cas d'etudes, cet article cherche a examiner le developpement de ces filiales dont le premier point de mire est l'industrie, jusqu'a leur engagement dans la fourniture des services a leurs marches, a la fois europeen et mondial. Obschon Forscher bei der Untersuchung der Internationalisierung der Dienstleistungsunternehmen die Notwendigkeit betonen, dies wegen der beiderseitigen Abhangigkeit von Produktion und Dienstleistungen als einen ganzheitlichen Vorgang anzusehen, ist die begriffliche Erfassung des Internationalisierungsvorgangs bisher durch die allgemeine Tendenz zuruckgehalten worden, sich auf Unternehmen zu konzentrieren, die Dienstleistungen von Fachleuten anbieten. Die fruchtbarsten theoretischen Entwicklungen haben sich bisher auf die Entwicklung von Tochtergesellschaften innerhalb der organisierten Dynamik internationaler Konzerne konzentriert, da sie bestrebt sind, komplexe, einheitliche Wertscho-super-¨pfungsketten fur ihre globalen Produktionsnetzwerke aufzubauen. Der vorliegende Aufsatz untersucht diese Entwicklungen im Zusammenhang mit Irlands zunehmend internationalem Sektor des Dienstleistungshandels, der mit dem signifikanten Auftreten von Tochtergesellschaften technologischer Korporationen in auslandischem Besitz in Verbindung gebracht wird. Gestutzt auf eine Anzahl Fallstudien untersucht dieser Aufsatz die Entwicklung dieser Tochtergesellschaften, bei denen anfangs die Produktion im Mittelpunkt stand, zunehmend jedoch die Beteiligung an Dienstleistungen fur ihre europaischen und globalen Markte. Aunque los investigadores que analizan la internacionalizacion de la actividad de servicios recalcan que es necesario considerarla como un proceso holistico debido a la interdependencia entre la produccion y los servicios, hasta ahora la conceptualizacion del proceso de internacionalizacion ha estado limitado debido a la tendencia comun de centrarse en las corporaciones de servicios especializados. Los desarrollos teoricos mas fructiferos hasta ahora se han enfocado en la evolucion de las filiales dentro de las dinamicas de la organizacion de corporaciones transnacionales porque intentan construir cadenas complejas de valores integrados para sus redes de produccion global. En este ensayo examino estos desarrollos en el contexto de los servicios gestionados internacionalmente surgidos en Irlanda y que estan relacionados con una presencia notable de filiales de sociedades tecnologicas de propiedad extranjera. Basandome en una serie de casos practicos, aqui examino como evolucionan estas filiales a partir de un enfoque inicial de fabricacion hasta una mayor participacion en los servicios de sus mercados europeos y mundiales.
