Abstract

HODGKINSON A., NYLAND C. and POMFRET S. (2001) The determination of location in New South Wales, Reg. Studies 35,39-55. There are currently a number of competing explanations of the role which regions play in national economic development processes, all of which appear to have elements of validity. A set of ideal types is developed from this literature as a framework in which to analyse diVerent patterns of regional location behaviour and to highlight changes in these patterns in response to international competition. The ranking of location factors analysed using both variance of means and principal components factor analysis confirm that processes aVecting location in New South Wales (NSW) are similar to those found in other advanced industrial economies. However, the quality of the communications network emerged as the most important location determinant across all firm and regional types. The increased signi™ cance of communications needs to be explained within the context of increasing globalization where firms depend on the rapid transmission of corporate and market opportunity information for competitive success. Globalization is also causing firms to concentrate in the major centres of each region, highlighting the importance of external economies, here measured as urbanization and localization economies in the determination of location. HODGKINSON A., NYLAND C. et POMFRET S. (2001) Les determinants de la localisation dans la Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, Reg. Studies 35, 39-55. HODGKINSON A., NYLAND C. und POMFRET S. (2001) Standortbestimmung in New South Wales, Reg. Studies 35, 39-55.
