Skilled International Migration: The Experience of Nurses in the UK

Abstract

HARDILL I. and MACDONALD S. (2000) Skilled international migration: the experience of nurses in the UK, Reg. Studies 34, 681-692. This paper reports on a study of the most feminized of professions, nursing. Current shortages of nurses within the UK National Health Service (NHS) have resulted in the recruitment of increasing numbers of overseas-qualified nurses. The study is based on the biographies of overseas-qualified nurses, obtained through in-depth interviews carried out in one case study hospital. Using these personal narratives, this paper illuminates the complex interweaving of economic and non-economic factors involved in migration decisions. Most nurses migrated as solos, experienced downward occupational mobility, and are used as a temporary stop-gap to fill labour shortages. HARDILL I. et MACDONALD S. Dieser Aufsatz berichtet �ber eine Studie der weiblichsten aller Berufsst�nde, der Krankenpflege. Der gegenw�rtige Mangel an Krankenschwestern im staatlichen Gesundheitsdienst (NHS) Großbritanniens hat zur Rekrutierung einer wachsenden Anzahl von Krankenschwestern gef�hrt, die ihre Qualifikation im Ausland erworben haben. Die Studie st�tzt sich auf die Biographien im Ausland qualifizierter Krankenschwestern, die in eingehenden Interviews in einem f�r diese Fallstudie gew�hlten Krankenhaus aufgenommen wurden. Mit Hilfe dieser pers�nlichen Schilderungen erhellt der Aufsatz die komplexe Verschlingung wirtschaftlicher und anderer Faktoren, die bei Entscheidungen, auszuwandern, eine Rolle spielen. Die meisten Krankenschwestern wanderten allein aus, stellten abnehmende berufliche Beweglichkeit fest und spielen zeitweilige L�ckenb�ßer, wo Mangel an Arbeitskr�ften herrscht.
