Technology Transfer in Automotive Parts Firms in China

Abstract

This contribution examines the process of technology transfer from foreign to local firms in the automotive parts industry in China, focusing on parts localization processes and technical capabilities. Using survey and case study information, the study compares parts localization and technical transfer programmes in China with the experience of Malaysia's Proton. The results show that Chinese firms have achieved localization much faster than Malaysia's Proton largely due to the strategic nature of government policy on foreign direct investment (FDI) and technology transfer.
