Abstract

Summary This contribution discusses the organisation of open source software development and the commercialisation of its products. Open source software is based on an openly distributed and modifiable kernel, which distinguishes it from traditional software development. The success of its development processes puts pressure on the traditional developers. The commercialisation of open source products and services triggers the question of how sustainable the voluntary developer community and the derived business models are. In this contribution, we discuss this ‘enigma’ of software development.
