Developing a green supplier evaluation system for the Chinese semiconductor manufacturing industry based on supplier willingness

Abstract

This study proposes a green supplier evaluation system for Chinese semiconductor manufacturers to evaluate supplier willingness to engage in green collaboration. This study develops evaluation criteria from a literature review and consultations with practitioners in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Then, the DEMATEL method is applied to derive an influential network relationship among the criteria, and the ANP method is used to obtain the influenced weights of the criteria and relationships. According to the analysis results, 13 criteria are included in this evaluation system and can be divided into four dimensions, including the ability to meet manufacturer demands, relationships, responsibility and commitment and implement environmental management. The results of the study reveal that suppliers’ ability to meet manufacturing demands is the critical criterion for evaluating supplier willingness, which can affect suppliers’ willingness to collaborate by affecting other indicators. The influential network relationship between the critical criterion and other criteria is also identified. The findings also reveal that a supplier's commitment to product quality is the criterion that best reflects the supplier's willingness to collaborate. Our research results can fill the gap in the extant literature on supplier selection in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. In addition, Chinese semiconductor manufacturers should be guided to select green suppliers with high willingness to collaborate in the reduction of carbon emissions.
