Impact of stubble burning on air pollution and climate change in East Burdwan District, India

Abstract

Stubble burning is a common phenomenon in India in the recent times. The residue burning strategy of the farmers helps reduce the labour cost, but this activity leads to significantly affect the environmental conditions, human capital, as well as social capital of the society too. The stubble burning results to increase in the temperature of the earth and to raise the sea level because of different types of GHGs emission to the air. The primary data for our research study have been collected using stratified random sampling method. We have estimated hectare wise and farmer wise emissions of GHGs to the air in East Burdwan district due to the stubble burning using the method suggested by Gadde et al. [Environ Pollut 157(5):1554–1558, 2009]. The amount of lost rice straw has been estimated using IPCC method, 2006. Further, we have checked the farm profitability of broadly two groups of farmers, namely, non-burner and burner of crop residues in the district. The responsible factors for stubble burning by the farmers in the district are also examined using binary logit regression method. The large farmers are found to have burnt more than 54% of their total crop residue. Interestingly, contrary to the popular belief, the farm profitability of non-burner farmers is comparatively higher than that of burner farmers in the district. Labour cost and supply of labour are observed to be the most responsible variables for stubble burning in the district.
