Determinants of linkages between agricultural institutions and agro-allied industries in Southwest, Nigeria

Abstract

Academia/research–industry linkages have attracted a lot of scholarship in recent years, sequel to its effectiveness in strengthening the knowledge transfer and rapid industrialization of many developed and developing nations. The potency of the linkage in ensuring sustainable development in the global–local economy cannot be underestimated. The study ascertained the determinants of linkage strength and the factors affecting the linkages between the agricultural institutions (higher institutions since they all have research and development mandates) and agro-allied industries in Southwest, Nigeria. Data were collected from 120 researchers/academics and industrial personnel selected through a multistage sampling procedure. A validated interview schedule and well-structured questionnaire were used to elicit information, and the data were analyzed through the use of percentages, mean, ordinal logistic regression model, and factor analysis. The result revealed that presence of special linkage unit (p = 0.004), location of the agricultural institutions and agro-allied industries (p = 0.042), distance (p = 0.019), years of establishment, and size of the institutions/industries (p = 0.032) were the contributory factors to the linkage strength in the study area. Also, the factor analysis results succinctly identified 3 factors affecting the linkage strength; personnel-related factors, organizational-related factors, and technical-related factors. Therefore, there is a need to formulate policies to ensure the presence of special units for linkage fostering and develop strategies to ameliorate the identified factors affecting successful linkage formation between the institutions and industries.
