Synthesis of studies on costs of cash and non-cash payment instruments (Synteza badan kosztow gotowki i bezgotowkowych instrumentow platniczych )

Abstract

The article aims to present the synthetic conclusions from studies on costs of cash and non-cash payment instruments. The author analyzed the most important and most comprehensive surveys, which have until now been carried out in the world. Studies were mainly undertaken by central banks cooperating with other parties from the payment chain – commercial banks, payment services subcontractors, consumers and merchants. There is an ongoing debate about cashless society, the benefits of electronic payment instruments, the competitiveness of banknotes and coins. Therefore, the traditional means of payment is a good reference point to study of costs of non-cash payment instruments-debit card, credit card, check, electronic money, credit transfers and direct debits. The article summarizes the national surveys of costs in terms of their range, aggregate data on the costs of cash and non-cash payment instruments, unit costs of payment instruments, the structure of social and private costs by payment stakeholders. The article elaborates more on the two latest studies – Norwegian (2009) and Hungarian (2011).
