Grouped probit regression analysis for shooting effectiveness in basketball

Abstract

In our paper we focused on probit modeling to describe shot effectiveness in basketball free throw. A few hypothesis were verified in repeated experiment. We aimed to determine whether especial skills emerges as a result of other predictors such as age, years of experience, efficiency in shot performance, etc. We also tested a hypothesis regarding visual dependency in especial skills effect. We noticed that some predictors, such as years of training, efficiency in real games, league achievements have strong influence on probability of shot success. Our data confirmed that there is non-linear and negative relationship between shooting distance and shot effectiveness. Blurred vision condition substantially deteriorated shot effectiveness from all shooting distances. However, the shot efficacy at 4,57 m distance was not significantly higher that from any other distances and therefore the hypothesis about context dependency was not confirmed.
