Abstract

The aim of this paper is to determine if the so-called January effect has been fading at major stock exchanges in the Americas. To this end, in the analysis we use two single-equation econometric specifications for the returns in each market: i) a standard one that uses seasonal dummies, and ii) a structural time series model. The results provided by the estimations of the standard model for different sample size show that the January effect is present only in the Brazilian market but it fades when the sample is bounded to more recent periods. The results of the structural model estimations reinforces the previous result.
