Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to assess the actual situation in the financial intermediation sector in Russia and determine the quality of performance by financial institutions of the investment function. The subject of research concerns large Russian financial institutions (commercial banks, non-government pension funds, insurance companies and mutual investment funds) and their role in the economy. The paper describes a theoretical approach to the functions and role of financial intermediaries in the economy based on the modern theory of financial intermediation and the institutional theory. Banking financial institutions are dominant intermediaries in the financial market but they are characterized by high interest rates and the lack of a long-term resource base. Non-banking financial intermediaries have a small market share and as such do not have any significant impact on the conversion of savings to investments.
