Abstract

In this article we look at the consequences of the increase in atypical jobs for the modernisation of trade unions. Atypical jobs present considerable problems, not only at the level of practical strategies, but also (and perhaps more importantly) at the level of more fundamental issues like work, income and social security; and participation, solidarity and internal democracy. These problems should not only be seen as a threat. In our view, they also present possibilities for the process of modernisation of trade unions. As a central issue in this process, we look at working-time patterns.
