The Influence of Management Consultants on the Outcome of Union Certification Elections

Abstract

This study examines the effect of management consultants on the probability of union victory in representation elections. An analysis of data on 130 elections in retail grocery outlets shows that consultant involvement decreased the probability of union victory to a degree that was sufficient to alter the outcome of closely contested elections. The impact of consultants was nevertheless considerably smaller than that of factors such as unit size and conditions in the relevant labor market.
