Personality Inclination and Emotional Flexibility on Business Performance among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

In Nigeria several policy interventions that were aimed at stimulating entrepreneurship development via small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) promotion have failed to achieve the desired goals. Similarly, the performance of owner-managers of SMEs shows a low level in Nigeria. An attempt to correct the supposedly poor SMEs performance required a better insight and understanding of the entrepreneurial attitudes factors associated with the enterprise. Therefore, the study examined the effects of personality inclination and emotional flexibility on business performance among SMEs in Oyo State. The study objective is to find out if personality inclinations and emotional flexibility of owner-managers of SMEs influence their performance. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and the study was carried out in Oyo State. The study population comprised all registered SMEs ownermanagers in Oyo State. Multi- stage sampling technique was used to select entrepreneurs in the three senatorial district of Oyo state. A total of four hundred and seventy-one (471) structured questionnaires were distributed based on sample size drawn. A returned rate of four hundred and thirty five (435) questionnaires was recorded, representing 92% of the sample size drawn. The study was guided by two research questions and hypotheses. Descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of SPSS version20.0 was employed to analyze the data collected for the study. The results obtained from the analysis show that there is a significant and positive linkage between personality inclination(R=.914) and emotional flexibility (R=.827) on SMEs performance. The study therefore, recommends that SMEs owner- mangers should possess high personality inclination and be emotional flexible in entrepreneurial activities to effectively improve performance.
