Abstract

[eng] At the roots of modern monetary thought . . The introduction of the present issue starts by emphasizing the difficulties faced by the analysis of the domestic value of money in a metallic standard and bank money regime. Then it shows that the mere existence of gold points leaves the variations of the exchange rate indeterminate, hence the relation between the domestic and foreign values of money as well. The classical debates are therefore interpreted as aiming at the definition of the conditions for monetary and exchange stability ; approaches in terms of mechanism, policy and rules are distinguished. The inclusion of the ten papers of the issue in that perspective is finally presented.
