Abstract

[eng] Exchange rate policy in central european countries. . The exchange rate fulfils a dual role in a small open economy. Ils variations can achieve and main tain international competitiveness so as to ensure a viable balance of payments. At the same time, a stable exchange rate can anchor domestic priees. It is then necessary to determine the relative weight which should be granted to each of these objectives in the making of exchange rate policy in central European countries in transition. To this aim, this paper gives elements of an empirical evaluation both on the effects of a devaluation or macroeconomic variables and trade flows and on the consequences of an exchange rate anchor in terms of the reduction of inflation inertia. We examine the case of the former Czecoslovakia, introducing elements for a comparison with the Polish experience on the role of the exchange rate in disinflation.
