Abstract

[eng] Econometric models of telecommunications firms : a survey . . The 15-year history of aggregate econometric models of American and Canadian telecommunications firms is outlined. Nearly forty models of AT&T and Bell Canada are examined in some detail. The survey concludes that the econometric models succeeded in producing robust empirical evidence on fundamental economie characteristics of telecommunications firms, such as those associated with factor demand, factor substitution, economies of scale and technological changes. Attention is drawn to the economi similarities of AT&T and Bell Canada. The most important failure of the surveyed econometric models is identified as their inability to quantify various forms of internal economies. Expected directions of future research are described. On retrace ici l'histoire de la modélisation économétrique de la production développée au cours des quinze dernières années par les entreprises de télécommunications nord-américaines, aux États-Unis et au Canada. Environ quarante modèles d'ATT et de Bell Canada sont ainsi discutés en détail. On conclut de cette revue que les modèles élaborés ont permis d'établir la preuve empirique solide de plusieurs caractéristiques fondamentales des entreprises de télécommunications, liées en particulier à la demande de facteurs de production, à la substitution entre ces facteurs, aux économies d'échelle, et à l'évolution technologique. On précise les similitudes économiques entre ATT et Bell Canada. Il apparaît que l'échec le plus sensible des modèles examinés est leur inaptitude à quantifier diverses formes d'économies internes de production propres aux firmes multi-produits. On mentionne en conclusion quelques directions souhaitables pour la recherche future.
