Abstract

[eng] The article proposes a survey of the economic literature in order to define a theoretical setting to standardization and certification. Two distinct approaches of the firm are mobilized. The first conceives the firm like an answer to a problem of incomplete information. Standardization improves the capacity of assessment quality. It encourages the customer's confidence in the credibility of supplier's engagements. The second approach considers the firm as depository of knowledge and competence. Standards are then a factor of creation of knowledge and the origin of its competitive advantage.
