Abstract

[eng] International economic literature acknowledges the increasing importance of intra-firm trade (30% of world trade). The purpose of this paper is to use an empirical approach to test how the determinants of these exchanges exert a different influence on the firm's internal and external markets. The results obtained for food multinational companies in France confirm this difference. Thus, the volume of intra-firm trade depends increasingly on the transfer of resources within the multinational group. It is based on economies of scale, which can be achieved better within the firm, and on the experience already acquired by the group which is beneficial to the affiliate. It also depends on the importance of the entry barriers into the activity, which can be circumvented by the internal market and on the intermediate nature of goods, that reveals the role of the multinational company in organising production.. The results emphasise the role of internal organisation of the multinational company.
