Abstract

[eng] The fundamental irreversibility of the technological evolution is related in this paper to the efficiency requirement made to the material device in which the technology is embodied. When we distinguish between the allocative and cumulative dimensions of this irreversibility it is possible to obtain a better analytical grasp of the technology development process. It is then possible to better locate some of the recent concepts that appeared in the literature on the subject like technological paradigms, technological competition and increasing returns to adoption. This in turn endows these concepts with a more precise economic content and enable us to use them more accurately.
