Abstract

[eng] The environment sought by firms Industrial and business services firms in Nord-Pas-de-Calais clearly prefer to locate around a large town. Access to transport infrastructures, especially motorways, is often a priority. Other important criteria are . the nature of locally dominant activities and the structure of the workforce. A environment with a dominantly industrial component and a highly skilled workforce are attractive. Firms' preferences differ from one sector to the next. For example, food firms are not attracted to large towns while business services firms are more likely to set up in large urban centres. Nevertheless, despite these preferences, firms rarely move. When they do, it is mainly to gain more suitable premises.
