Abstract

[eng] From One Census to Another: . The Geographical Redistribution of Jobs from 1975 to 1990 . From 1975 to 1990, France's 365 mainland employment areas experienced varying luck: although fourteen areas enjoyed growth in employment of over 20%, virtually half the areas saw the number of jobs decrease. . These imbalanced trends are partly due to differences in the sectorial make-up of employment. In general, the trend is less favourable in areas with a large proportion of . employment in agriculture and industry than in areas with a large service sector. . Yet economic activity structures do not explain all the differences observed, as can be seen with the case of the Paris region areas. In spite of a supposedly more propitious business structure in Paris, employment is stagnating in the capital and is rising sharply in the outer suburbs. The same holds true for the major regional towns.
