Abstract

[eng] Areas in Large Cities: Social Contrasts in an Urban Environment - Urban Areas are far from being homogeneous: within cities, the differences in social status or the structure of households create contrasts from one area to another. These contrasts differentiate cities, depending on the prevailing type and configuration of the local district. The old industrial suburbs of the North can be opposed to recently built areas for executives which are Toulouse's characteristic: each city has its own identity. . Between a mosaic like Marseille and a homogeneous urban environment like Lens, there is plenty of middle ground. Thus, the map of local districts reflects the history and the economy of the city. Between 1982 and 1990, working class areas lose their population and the suburbs, where technicians and industrial executives live, spread out: these contrasted urban environments have also had diverging demographic trends over the last few years.
