Abstract
[eng] Employment in the service sector: somewhat ambiguous growth - In 1982, 800,000 more people were employed in the private service sector than in 1975, which is considerable. However, a portion of these supplementary jobs resulted from a change in job classification. In the two sectors which are the principal creators of employment, « health and social services » and « private service offered principally to firms », the rhythm of creation seems to have slowed down. In the other services, intended more for households, the growth of the number of workers has remained stable, such as in repair work and the car trade. Growth has picked up, however, in hotels, cafés and restaurants. Nevertheless, in seven years, only 170,000 jobs have been created. It cannot be expected, therefore, that these services replace « health » and « services offered principally to firms » should the expansion of the latter slow down significantly. Last, in general, growth of employment is accompanied by an increase of non-salaried jobs and of women in the work force.
