Abstract
[eng] Are Importers also Exporters? - The French foreign trade apparatus is composed of approximately 30,000 firms. It is characterized by three key traits. Firstly, there is the concentration of trade in the 7,900 firms which are simultaneously importers and exporters, and which account for 80 % of sales and 85 % of purchases abroad; of these, the top 150 firms play a particularly active role as they account for 40 % of foreign trade. In spite of this concentration, the firms are specialized. Among those which are exclusively importers or exporters, small firms are the most numerous; but firms which are both importers and exporters often find that one of these activities becomes dominant. A third characteristic Is the differentiation within the different sectors of activity. As it groups together a large number of subsidiaries of foreign corporations, wholesale trade is primarily oriented towards importation; however, industry — in which the enlarged public sector plays a dominant role — assures the bulk of France's imports.
