Abstract
[eng] The Weight and Height of the French - According to the survey « Health and Medical Consumption » of 1970, the average height of men in France was 1.70 meters and their weight 72 kilograms; women's height was 1.60 meters and their weight 60 kilograms. The height within the most affluent social categories was significantly greater than in the poorer segments of the population. The retired, on the one hand, and students, on the other, were situated at the extremities of the range of heights; however, this was partly due to the increase in height from one generation to the next. Of the different regions, the North and the East are notably taller than the average, while the West is shorter. Although executives and administrators have a relatively high average weight, they in fact weigh less than office and factory workers if one takes into account the effects of age and height. Owners of firms — in commerce and industry — as well as farmers, are significantly heavier. If we take the norms of Lorentz, 1/4 of the adults surveyed are at least 20 % over the « ideal weight », although only 1 % of the men and 3 % of the women admit to being on a diet.
