Abstract

[eng] Does technical and vocational education provide individuals with networks that ensure effective protection against career risks ? Using the “ young ” sample from INSEE ’ s 1997 “ Youth and Careers ” Survey , we see that school-leavers from the technical and vocational track are more likely to find their jobs through networks of contacts than school-leavers from the general education track . They find their first jobs more quickly and are better paid . However , once the effectiveness of the network has been taken into account , the way the first job is found does not influence school-to-work transition times or earnings . Once they have been accepted , job offers made through networks are no different from job offers from other sources .
