L’economia insegnata. Le Lezioni di Attilio da Empoli nell’Italia della ricostruzione (Professed economics. The Lectures of Attilio da Empoli in Italy during the reconstruction)

Abstract

During the twentieth century the Manual takes the place of the Treatise as tool of synthesis and communication of economic knowledge. Some textbooks are only representative of the original thought of their authors, while others express the degree of progress of economic science in particular historical phases; some textbooks instil certainties and harmonic views of the working of markets, others arouse questions and criticism showing the weak sides of economic theories. In this essay, I brie?y describe the nature of Manuals and present some of the most important textbooks adopted in Italy after WWII; then I outline a profile of the textbook written by Attilio da Empoli (1904-1948) and published in 1946. The economics professed by da Empoli is an original and critical one that introduces the hypothesis of discontinuity of the utility and cost functions.
